Artist in the Community

"I enjoy working on projects with others, helping release creativity and see ideas develop and flourish. It’s an exhilarating process” he says, “besides being great fun, I consider it a privilege to be able to create something to enhance the environment and to be left as a legacy for all involved."

Chelmsford Cathedral Centenary Mosaic (2014)

An artist commission project to celebrate the centenary of Chelmsford Cathedral, in the reimaging of an icon of Christ, by local Christian artist Peter Harrington. The project initiated by Youth Minister Tim Leeson involved the people of Chelmsford working alongside the artist to create a stunning edition to the cathedral.

"The mosaic is so much more than a beautiful work of art. In a way that I don't think any of us could have predicted, it invites people to cross the threshold. People walking through the cathedral grounds catch a glimpse of the gold halo and are drawn in to find out more. And maybe that is part of the way it was made – yes, Peter set the template and created the design, but from the outset it has been a work people have done together, so the finished product is a real expression of community."

Nicholas Henshall, Dean of Chelmsford Cathedral serving Essex & East London www.chelmsfordcathedral.org.uk

"I loved working with Peter on this project. It was a real pleasure to connect with someone so passionate about the creative process, and who really understand the motivation behind the piece. I would definitely recommend Peter to anyone looking to undertake a similar project; he is a guarantee of quality!"

Tim Leeson, Youth Minister at 53a, Chelmsford Cathedral
